Good afternoon. Hermann here, from Itaga Lodge in the Waterberg. I saw you were interested in the bush after 60 — what kind of adventure are you hoping to find?
My wife and I are retired. We've done the standard game drives — they're lovely, but we're looking for something a bit more active. Walks, birding, photography. Not just sitting in a vehicle.
I hear you. A lot of our guests in your position say the same thing — after a while, game drives start feeling like a checklist. You want to be in the bush, not just looking at it from a window.
We offer guided bush walks with a tracker — early morning and late afternoon. It's a completely different experience. You notice the small things: tracks, bird calls, the way the light moves through the trees. Our birding list here is over 300 species, and we have a specialist guide for photographers who knows exactly where to position you for the best light.
Would that be more your pace?
That sounds exactly right. My wife is an avid birder. I'm more into photography. How long would you recommend for a stay like that?
For a combination like yours — birding for her, photography for you — I'd recommend 4 to 5 nights. That gives you time for two guided bush walks, a dedicated birding morning with our guide, a photography-focused afternoon drive where you can spend 20 minutes at each sighting without feeling rushed, and still plenty of time to relax at the lodge between outings.
You'd be in a Superior chalet — they're the quietest, set back from the main area, with a private deck that faces into the bush. Your wife can sit with her binoculars and tick off species while you set up your camera for the afternoon light.
R2,845 per person per night, sharing, all meals included. The bush walks and guided birding are extra — around R450 per activity.
Would you like me to check availability and send you a full itinerary?
Yes, please. Also — my wife has mild arthritis. Are the walks manageable?
Good question, and I'm glad you asked. Our bush walks are at a relaxed pace — we stop frequently to observe and explain, so it's not a hike. The terrain is mostly flat along game paths. The tracker sets the pace based on the group.
That said, if she'd prefer something gentler, we also offer a guided photography drive — you stay in the vehicle, but you're not racing between sightings. You stop wherever you want, for as long as you want. Many of our guests do a mix: a morning walk one day, a photography drive the next.
I'll include both options in the itinerary I send you. Does that work?
That's perfect. Please go ahead.
Done. I've sent the full itinerary to this chat with both activity options, rates, and a booking link. If you decide on a mix of walks and drives, I can help you schedule the best times based on the season.
Take your time. And if your wife has any specific bird species she's hoping to see, let me know — our guide keeps a sightings log and we can plan around what's active right now.
